How to Make Friends in High School

Starting High School can be overwhelming and intimidating, especially if you don’t have a close group of friends to start this adventure off with. A high school senior has given a speech to incoming freshmen about how to make it through high school in one piece, and enjoy the ride along the way. Here are some of her tidbits of advice:

1. You are Not Alone: First and foremost, remember that you are not alone. There are dozens, maybe even hundreds (depending on the size of your school) of people who are sitting here thinking, “I’m not going to fit in, I’m not going to have any friends, no one is going to like me,” just like you are.

2. Introduce Yourself: Don’t be afraid to meet new friends and introduce yourself to someone. That person you introduced yourself to will most likely be ecstatic that someone decided to talk to them, and you will more than likely hit it off.

3. Sports and Clubs: One of the best ways to make a tight knit group of friends is to join a sport or club. Many incoming freshmen decide to do this as a way to make friends, and it is HIGHLY effective.

4. Teachers Can Help: Your teachers are there to help you. If you need some advice that your friends or family may not be able to answer, your teacher might be able to; and they are, generally, more than willing to help.

5. Popularity means NOTHING: It may seem like the most important thing to you right now; but be assured, high school popularity will mean absolutely nothing after you graduate. Let’s reiterate that, high school popularity will mean absolutely NOTHING after you graduate.

6. Do your homework: It may sometimes seem like busy work, but it will truly help you in your classes and help prep you for college.

7. Have fun!: High school is supposed to be part of your golden years of your life. Don’t waste it on stressing over one guy the whole time, or hiding in the shadows. Get out there and enjoy yourself!
